Article: A measure of emotional intelligence

Townsville Sun, May 1, 2002, Wednesday

HOW emotionally intelligent are you? That is, how well do you handle your emotions and the emotions of others?

James Cook University is offering locals a unique opportunity to have their emotional intelligence (EQ) measured, as part of a research project by PhD student, Karen Gardner. She is looking at the validity of existing EQ tests.

"Famous Harvard psychologist, Dr Daniel Goleman, claims emotional intelligence is more important for success in life than the traditional brainpower measure -- IQ," said Ms Gardner, an organisational behaviour researcher with JCU's School of Business.

Volunteers who complete a series of questionnaires for Ms Gardner's research will receive feedback on their EQ level, plus a chance to win a $150 shopping voucher for Stockland.

Participants will need to come to the JCU Townsville campus for two, one-hour testing sessions beginning today.

The publisher of one EQ test claims it is the premier scientific measure of emotional intelligence, measuring a person's ability to deal with daily environmental demands and pressures to predict his or her professional and personal success in life.
