Article: Gold Coast to host alternative medicine conference

ABC News Australia, Tuesday, July 23, 2002

Almost 200 of the world's leading alternative medicine specialists will gather on the Gold Coast this week for the 40th annual World Congress of Integrated Medicine.

The conference, usually held in Sri Lanka each year, has been shifted to Australia due to concerns about the unstable political climate on the Indian sub-continent.

Gold Coast Conference' chief executive Marilyn Strauss says alternative medicine is the main treatment for illness in many parts of Africa and Asia.

"Well, in the Asian countries they have to look at alternative medicines, they can't afford the pharmacy costs, it's very much a part of their culture and it's something they can afford," she said. The congress begins on Friday.
